Deleueze's concept of The Island in Different and Repetition sees it as 'geographical dramatisation differenciates or divides the concepts into two types, the original oceanic type, which signals an eruption or raising above the sea, and the continental drift type which results from the disarticulaton or fracture.' In this sense Smithson's Spiral Jerry opperates on both types of island, it is a manmade eruption but it is a fracture of the lands topology.

"shared rhetoric of stratigraphy, of topology and cartography, and of crystalline structure and movement arenot incidental but bear witness to a deep conceptual affinity around the critique ofspace and spatialized paradigms of thought, as well as the processes of desubjectification and decentering manifest in and through a radical encounter with time." -V.
